AA vs AAA Contrast Explained

AA and AAA are conformance levels used in WCAG. For color contrast, AAA generally asks for stronger text contrast than AA, but the required ratio also depends on whether the text is considered normal or large.

The quick comparison

Should every design aim for AAA?

Stronger contrast can improve readability, but accessible design is a system-level task. A color pair that meets AAA does not automatically make the entire interface accessible, and some brand palettes may require careful tradeoffs across components and states.

Use the ratio as a test, not a guess

Two colors can look very different and still miss a target ratio, while another pair may pass even if the difference feels subtle. Check the numeric ratio for the exact values you plan to ship.
