How to extract a hex code from a screenshot

If you see a color in a website, app mockup, photo or inspiration image and want the exact hex value, use a pixel color picker rather than estimating by eye.

Quick method on Android

  1. Save or take the screenshot you want to sample.
  2. Open Contrast Checker and upload the screenshot.
  3. Tap the exact area of the image containing the color you want.
  4. Copy the extracted six-digit hex code.
  5. Use that value in CSS, a design tool, a brand palette or a contrast check.
Example uses: matching a website color, rebuilding a palette from a reference image, identifying a UI color, sampling artwork, or checking whether a sampled color works with your text color.

Why the exact pixel matters

Screenshots can contain gradients, anti-aliasing, shadows and compression. Sampling the specific pixel you want gives you a more useful value than guessing from the overall appearance.
