How to Split a Bill Fairly When Everyone Ordered Different Amounts
An equal split is convenient, but it can feel unfair when spending varies a lot. A better approach is to separate personal purchases from shared costs and decide how each shared cost should be allocated.
Separate the bill into two buckets
Personal items belong to the person who ordered them. Shared costs include things like shared appetizers, tax, tips or fees that apply across the group.
Choose how to allocate shared costs
- Equal: everyone pays the same share of the shared amount.
- Proportional: people who spent more contribute a larger share of tax, tip or fees.
- Custom: use an agreed split for a specific shared item.
Example
If one person orders a small meal and another orders several drinks and an entrée, a proportional split of tax and tip can better preserve the relationship between what each person actually spent.
Keep the math transparent
The fairest system is the one the group understands. Show the subtotal, shared allocation and final amount rather than handing people an unexplained number.
